Venue illustrations are a beautiful way to personalise your wedding invitations with a custom element that is special and unique to you. Illustrations created by hand have a beautiful lively quality that makes them the perfect addition to many design styles.

You can commission a venue illustration to be used on any piece in your suite. We offer a number of invitation suites which feature venue illustrations as an integral part of the design style. However, you can also add a venue illustration to any of our suites. You can also use the illustration on different pieces - Information cards, Save the dates, Custom Maps, Menus, Program Covers - the options are endless.

Venue illustrations are completely hand-drawn by me and lots of time and skill goes into each drawing. Creating these illustrations is one of my favourite parts of the design process. I feel honoured to be given the opportunity to create a custom illustration for my couples.

Style

Hand-drawn illustrations have a special quality to them - the detail and character of the line in a pen illustration is so distinct. There is a certain thoughtfulness, imperfection, and liveliness of a hand-drawn illustration that can add so much to a design. The style is distinctly different from a digital illustration which can tend to feel impersonal and over-stylized. The detail that can be captured by pen translates beautifully into letterpress, so it is a perfect pairing of the two mediums.

I create each venue illustration working by hand in pen and ink on paper. The illustration is usually sketched with a pencil after which I'll work over the initial outlines with pen or ink and brush. My drawing style detailed, with tones to create form in the building or depth in the scene. I love incorporating greenery or surrounds into illustrations when I can as this gives the image depth and context and can often help to 'ground' the building. The drawing is then scanned and converted to be suitable to use in the design.

Subject

Illustrations can be of your ceremony or reception venue, the view or surrounding landscape, a significant landmark or perhaps even a place of meaning to you as a couple. Anything goes really! I've created drawings of old churches, hillsides, islands, boats and vistas, and all work equally well. Commission a Custom Illustration

A custom illustration can be a beautiful way to personalise your wedding invitations, save the dates, information cards or programs. Custom illustrations can be added to any of our suites, not just those that feature a sample venue illustration. Pricing begins at $60 for a custom venue illustration. To begin, we recommend getting in touch to discuss your illustration ideas and options for your suite as well as to receive a quote. If your subject is suitable, there may be some discussion about the important elements to include or angle you'd like to see in the design. Note that I normally like to capture buildings from oblique angle as this adds depth and form.
